Changing the World a Bead at a Time
There are many things I love about the jewelry business. Ours is a happy business, helping people celebrate the important occassions of their lives through jewelry. If you think about it, jewelry is almost always symbolic of love. So when we found out about a wonderful charitable organization, BeadforLife, we wanted to figure out a way to shine a light on the amazing way they demostrate love through jewelry.
Women in Uganda create beautiful beaded jewelry from recyled paper. These simple and economical pieces (bracelets and necklaces ranging from $5 to $30) allow the women to go from earning $1 breaking up rocks in a quarry to $7 per day; a huge difference in Uganda. The jewelry becomes food, housing, medicine, school fees and, indeed hope for the women and their families.
In the US, home based "Bead Parties" have been the primary way people learn about the beads.
We thought it would be great for Alvin Goldfarb Jeweler to host a week long "Bead Party" in both stores. From July 25th to August 1st please stop by either store to learn more about BeadforLife and to see the jewelry. It's an innovative way to connect with people half way around the world, lend a hand and look great. Please spread the word, all are welcome!
